Bourgeois de Calais

One of six figures of the “Bourgeois de Calais” (1884-1886) in the Louvre museum by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).

This figure represents Pierre de Wissant one of the hero’s of Calais who surrendered himself in 1347 to save the citizens of Calais from the English laying siege to the city.

Rodin wanted to present the hero’s with their “pain, anguish and fatalism”; this was to represent the heroism of self-sacrifice.
